Loving BotI anime (haven’t read the manga)

Blade of the Immortal – Initial Review [9/10]

  • Episodes Watched: (1) Criminal, (2) Conquest

Even though I’m already a bit familiar about this, since I haven’t read the manga, I don’t really know what to expect. Some people (who’ve read the manga) don’t seem happy about it, but for me (who knows nothing), so far, I’m impressed. A dark story about an immortal swordsman was enough to keep me interested. But what got me hooked was how the story was unfolding. It was not at all predictable, and the violent and mature theme very much fits my taste.

Years ago, I’ve already been told by friends that this is great work. In fact, I do have a copy of the manga myself. But I never got around to reading it somehow. Now that the anime is out, I took the chance to check out the story. I don’t know how loyal it will be to the manga, and I don’t plan to read the manga until after the anime. I won’t have to wait that long, since it’s only 13 episodes… though I’m thinking maybe 13 episodes may be a bit short for a manga with this much hype. But let’s judge that when it gets there. As for now, I love the show and I’m sticking to it.

Shion no Ou – Initial Review [8/10]

  • Initial Rating: 8 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) Shion’s Path, (2) Secrets, (3) Komaoto

Shion no Ou

I’ll start with the opening song, “LADY LOVE” by RIZE, which I really like, but somehow don’t find fitting for the anime. It’s too strong for a show which centers on a gentle-faced protagonist. But then, the anime does involve a murder. Well, this is just my impression. Sorry for making a big deal out of the opening song :P

Yasuoka Shion is an elementary school student who is exceptionally skilled in shougi. When she was four years old, her parents were murdered and she was taken in by a family friend and shougi player who raised her and trained her in shougi. However, since the tragedy, she has lost the ability to speak.

Shion would sometimes have flashes of memory of the murder, like a scene of someone’s bloody fingers setting a shougi piece. Perhaps the murderer is a shougi player? Intriguing.

With her sincerity and intelligence, Yasuoka Shion, the main character, is easy to love. That and the murder mystery are enough reasons for me to watch this anime, and they actually are, despite not knowing anything at all about shougi. But since I can pretty much sense the state of the game from the reaction of the characters, I think that’s good enough for now. It still helps to know shougi, though.

Night Wizard – Initial Review [6/10]

  • Initial Rating: 6 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) Lunar Casket, (2) Fallen Man, (3) The Two Flames

Night Wizard The Animation

“Night Wizard The Animation” is about a group of Wizards who fight against Emulators – dark forces from a separate world that wants to invade Earth. I get the impression that this is another cliche fantasy adventure whose characters don’t even seem to have enough of a rapport. I can’t say though that its enjoyment factor is nil – it did entertain me somewhat. I guess I’ll see where this goes, but for now, that’s really just all I have to say.

YUA: Full Throttle – Initial Review [7/10]

  • Initial Rating: 7 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) Prologue of Racing, (2) The Small Samurai, (3) Strong Arm! The Prohibited Wrestler

Full Throttle

“You’re Under Arrest: Full Throttle” begins with Miyuki back from the United States and Natsumi back from Ranger training. Together again as partners, these two beautiful and warm-hearted girls rejoin their friends in the Bokuto Police Department to fight crime once more.

My interest in this anime is mainly because of Natsumi. With her brute strength and impulsive personality, she is enjoyable to watch, definitely the spice this show needs.

Not that it’s a bad show. Though a bit slow-paced and somewhat boring at times, the comedy and light action (mostly by Natsumi) provides good entertainment, especially if you just want to sit back and relax rather than indulge in more serious shows.

Suteki Tantei Labyrinth – Initial Review [7/10]

  • Initial Rating: 7 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) Kyuto Detective, (2) Mayuki’s Determination, (3) Slanted Tower Adventure

Suteki Tantei Labyrinth

The main character, Hyuuga Mayuki, is as much a mystery as the cases he solves in this anime. He is an elementary school student who loves tea and lives in a mansion, but he has some special kind of insight which makes him able to solve mysteries.

My impression when seeing a picture of this anime, with all the bright faces and smiles, is that it’s a kiddy show with lots of happy-happy stuff. But that impression has changed. The mysteries here are far from kiddy.

I would have given this a higher rate if it weren’t for the servants-turning-into-fighters thing which really seems far-off. I like action and all, but I don’t get the connection (yet?) and it looks like there are two separate things going on. In one part, we have a nice young boy who hangs out with his nice young friends and solves mysterious crimes… and on the other, we have some sexy costumed women fighting each other on rooftops. I’m like, “huh?”

Anyway, this anime intrigues me, and oh, those white-haired twins look cool, so I’m hanging on to this one.

Shana II – Initial Review [8/10]

  • Initial Rating: 8 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) The Second Time, (2) The Beginning of Everything, (3) The Suspicious Transfer Student

Shakugan no Shana II

The cute and feisty red-headed Flame Haze is back in Shakugan no Shana II! I can’t really say I’m a big fan, but Shana is just adorable!

Based on the first three episodes, the story levels up a notch as strange new villains and characters are introduced, while the connection between Shana and Yuji fundamentally remains unchanged, having the same kind of relationship they had the previous season. This season is worth watching if you are a fan of the first one.

Rental Magica – Initial Review [7/10]

  • Initial Rating: 7 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) Magic Users for Rental, (2) A Witch’s Vow, (3) Purification of the Gods

Rental Magica

Though Rental Magica has yet to impress me, it is not poor in quality. The magic used in this anime ranges from Celtic to Shinto and watching it throws you into a slight whirlwind of magical terms and references. Shinsen-Subs even added some notes at the end which were somewhat useful and even entertaining.

Rental Magica is about “Astral”, a company that ‘rents out’ mages for their customers to help with magic-related situations. With the previous president gone, the title is entrusted to his high school son Itsuki, who has no real ability in magic but resorts to studying about it. He is pretty much regarded as ‘useless’ but ends up saving the day anyway by using his all-seeing scarlet right eye.

The first three episodes weren’t really engaging, but the mystery behind Itsuki’s eye, and the different methods of magic used by the characters kept my interest in the show. So I’m sticking to this one for the meantime.

Dragonaut – Initial Review [6/10]

  • Initial Rating: 6 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) Resonance – Joined Hands, (2) Tryst – The World Begins to Move, (3) Awakening – The Wings Gather

Dragonaut - The Resonance

The term “Dragonaut” sounded somewhat cool so I decided to check it out. It started off pretty okay with some potential, but at the end of the second episode, the coolness-level really dropped (and it wasn’t even high to begin with). The animation of the dragons – they did it in CG – were just lame. It really wasn’t consistent with everything else, which were doing pretty well in 2D. Why couldn’t they just do it in 2D? Grr.

If it weren’t for my interest and curiosity in the story, I would have dropped this series. The story centers on Jin and his encounter with a mysterious pink-haired girl named Toa. Due to her pink hair or my biases against the color, I thought she would be yet another helpless character. But then, I saw her fight and actually found her a bit cool. In fact, she is currently the only character I’m interested in in this anime.

Bamboo Blade – Initial Review [7/10]

  • Initial Rating: 7 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) The Bamboo Broom and Comrades of Justice!, (2) Blade Braver and Lunch, (3) Black and Blue

Bamboo Blade

I had no real expectations for this anime except that I thought I’d be dropping it after the first episode, thinking it will mostly consist of cutesy girls rather than real action. Though, considering I actually picked it up to begin with (the term “Bamboo Blade” just sounded cool), I must have given it more of a chance than I thought I would.

So I watched the first episode, preparing to cringe or raise an eyebrow, but never really did. It wasn’t exceptional but it wasn’t as annoying as I thought. The guy irritated me a bit and I found some of its humor corny, but the anime actually revealed some potential coolness. One of the characters, Tama-chan, and a promised fight between her and a sadistic bully became the reason I watched the next episode. After which, I found more reasons to watch the anime, mostly because of the characters, like nice girl Miya-Miya who has a dark hidden personality, or ‘random’ girl Saya whose silly random-ness is just whacky.

So obviously, the show entertained me enough to keep on watching. I now have higher expectations and hope not to get disappointed.

Gundam 00 – Initial Review [8/10]

  • Initial Rating: 8 out of 10.
  • Episodes Watched: (1) Celestial Being, (2) Gundam Meister, (3) Changing World

Mobile Suit Gundam 00

With the word “Gundam”, certain expectations come to mind: advanced technology, political issues, and mecha action. These were exactly my thoughts when I found out the upcoming release of yet another Gundam series… well, that and young dramatic pilots.

Mobile Suit Gundam 00’s plot is about an organization called Celestial Being whose goal is to globally eliminate wars through their own warfare which centers on the use of highly advanced mobile suits called (guess! guess!) Gundams. With the world divided into three global organizations, UNION, HRL, and AEU, humankind is yet to be united. Can the ambitious Celestial Being achieve worldwide peace with Gundam Meisters Setsuna F. Seiei, Lockon Stratos, Allelujah Haptism, and Tiera Erde in the frontlines?

The little overview I wrote above is just based on my impressions in watching the first three episodes of Gundam 00. I am not fully convinced Celestial Being can actually achieve to eliminate all wars with their method. Haven’t they ever heard of the saying “violence begets violence”? These thoughts of mine are actually echoed in the show, which is a good thing because it means the story could progress in such a way that Celestial Being, though how noble their cause, could be in the wrong. However, the plot’s development could also arrive at a point where Celestial Being would prove themselves actually capable of accomplishing such goal. Because I believe a world without conflict is a dead world, I would not approve of such development. In any case, my interest in this anime is really high because of that.

Of course, the plot couldn’t be as simple as that. I’m already expecting (and have detected) minor and major subplots about the pilots (well, of course), other characters, certain events, and other issues as well. Let’s see… romantic involvement, betrayal, personal drama – I’d expect at least these three among the pilots, or so-called “Gundam Meisters”. And speaking of which, none of them currently appeals to me at all. Their names, to begin with, don’t sound human, except maybe Setsuna’s, which sounds Japanese so he’s not supposed to have a middle initial! And how come he’s the only one with it? Well, I’m sure it has some significance… and it better be good. Hmmph.

So I’m not so impressed with the characters, but the Gundams are pretty cool, especially Exia, which belongs to Setsuna’s. I can’t really speak for majority because I’m easily impressed by these kinds of things, but their GN particles (light particles thingy) made them look almost mystical. Like fairies! Ahahaha, of course not, I’m just kidding, but fairies and pixie dusts came to mind when I saw it. Oh and Exia has a weapon that would remind you of a light sabre. Cool, huh? I love those.

I also liked how Gundam Exia was introduced. There was a demonstration about a mobile suit prototype called Enact, piloted by an egotistical ace pilot, and was supposed to be exceptional. Exia pretty much came out of nowhere (e.g. the sky) and interrupted the little demo going on by engaging combat with Enact. As a result, Enact was quickly destroyed but the pilot was totally unharmed. Exia left with people wondering what that was all about (Celestial Being and its goals were unheard of at that time) and how a mobile suit powerful enough to defeat their own brand new prototype, which was of the latest technology, actually exist.

Another thing that caught my attention was the line “My wishes over their airspace” from the opening song DAYBREAK’S BELL by L’Arc~en~Ciel. I found the English kinda funny but yeah, it is a bit poetic and fitting, actually, for the show. But it really makes me giggle somehow… Hihihi!

Anyway, before I end this review, I just have a quick a note about the subbing. My preferred fan-sub group for this anime is Conclave-Mendoi because I really like the karaoke style and I’m very satisfied with the fonts used. I’ve tried watching an episode subbed by a different group but I didn’t really like it as much. Job well done, Conclave-Mendoi!

Well, that’s about it for my initial review of Mobile Suit Gundam 00. End.

Darker Than Black – Initial Review [8/10]

  • Initial Rating: 8 out of 10
  • Episodes Watched: (1) The Shooting Star of the Contract Part 1, (2) The Shooting Star of the Contract Part 2

Darker Than Black

What first caught my attention was the title, considering black is my favorite color *big grin* and after watching the first episode it now caught my interest. Not much action has happened so far, but I’m hoping for cool action scenes and a varied display of power and fighting styles in the following episodes. Since different groups are involved, the story is probably going to get complicated and intense, though hopefully not too much.

So far, the character that got my attention (aside from that curious black cat that keeps popping up) is the stoic Yin. I know there are other animes with similar type characters but I’m curious about what she can do and stuff, and how big a part she is to the show.

The main character Hei A.K.A. Li, is of course, interesting… bordering on suspicious. But with his unappealing facial expressions, with the dullness of his eyes, he has yet to impress me. It’s almost as if I don’t find him suitable as a main character. His wire thing is pretty neat though – quick and slick.

Another main character, though a bit underrated here, is Kirihara Misaki, who for me seems to be the typical strong woman, Section Chief of Foreign Affairs. Well, there’s not really much to say about her at this point.

Those who like Rie Fu are probably gonna like the ending theme “Tsukiakari”, but I’m more into fast-pace ones like the opening song “HOWLING” by the “abingdon boys school” (though I don’t get what the hell “abingdon” means – did they mean “abandoned boys school”?).

This is it for now. I don’t know yet if I should be recommending this to anyone, but it seems promising.
